English Breakfast tea

English_breakfast
English Breakfast is perhaps the best known of the classic blends. A blend of teas from Ceylon (for flavour), Assam (for strength) and Kenya (for colour), though others teas are sometimes used.

English Breakfast is full-bodied, rich and robust. It has a distinct sweetness and roundedness of flavour and a deep red-brown colour. It is robust enough to accompany the heartiest of breakfasts – and if you miss breakfast completely it is invigorating and refreshing enough to get your day off to a good start on its own!

It is also a very versatile tea which is great to drink at any time of day. A mid-afternoon break with a mug of E.B. and a nice bit of cake will keep you going for another hour or two!

Asassam-teasam tea

Pure Assam teabags are a proper, quality cuppa – made, as you would expect, with proper, fine-quality tea.  So relax, enjoy your tea-break, and be confident and happy in the knowledge that the tea in your teabag is of excellent quality and ethically sourced.

Assam is in the E part of India, in the valley of the River Brahmaputra.  The climate here is uncomfortable for people, but ideal for growing tea, and it is even possible that the tea plant is indigenous to this region.

Classic Assam teas such as this are rich and full-flavoured with plenty of colour and a distinct malty character, with some sweetness.  They are ideal for drinking with milk at breakfast time and throughout the day and have enough flavour and richness to accompany food well, even a classic full English breakfast.

Darjeeling tea

DarjeelingPure Darjeeling of this quality is rarely if ever found in a teabag. The “Champagne of Teas” is famous throughout the tea world for its light, delicate, toasty flavour and refreshing character.
Darjeeling is the area of East India famous for its exceptional teas.  High in the foothills of the Himalayas and near the border with Nepal, it is largely the high elevation that creates the conditions that make for excellent teas. The relatively cool climate allows the tea to grow rather slowly, developing more flavour in the process.

Darjeeling has a light, brisk, muscatel flavour with some brightness and a floral character. The outstanding estates are highly prized by connoisseurs as producing perhaps the finest teas in the world during the best years.  It is a good afternoon tea and is delicate and refreshing.

Rooibos tea

rooibos_teaRooibos, or Red Bush tea, comes from the South African shrub Aspalathus linearis.  The Khosian people have used this remarkable plant for many centuries for its medicinal properties as well as for its mellow, sweet, refreshing flavour.

Rooibos leaves are needle-like in shape and an appealing mahogany colour, making this infusion easy to recognise.  The brewed tea is distinctly red in colour, with a soft, mellow aroma and a smooth, sweet, pleasant, calming flavour.

The healing properties claimed for Rooibos are many.  It is naturally completely caffeine-free, so is ideal for drinking in the evening.  It is also believed to contain up to 50 times the antioxidant properties of green tea.  It is used medicinally to treat stomach upsets, skin complaints, insomnia and allergies.

China Green tea

Green_teaMore green tea than black is drunk in China.  Both types – in fact all types of tea – come from the same basic plant, Camellia Sinensis, the Chinese Camellia.  The difference is in how the teas are processed.

After the tea is plucked ,  it is laid in withering troughs to dry out and oxidise or ferment.  This darkens the leaves and allows the flavours to develop.  Green tea is withered for only a few hours before being rolled and then fired in an oven to halt oxidisation.   After firing it is graded for packing.

This blend of premium China green tea is light, delicate and refreshing with a wonderful smooth flavour and bright aroma.  It will revive you on a busy, hot summer’s day.   And why not try using it to make iced tea?
